Carotid Duplex Examination

A Carotid Doppler is an ultrasound exam which uses Ultrasound and Doppler to evaluate the carotid arteries in the neck that lead to the brain. This study is used to detect a blockage or narrowing of the carotid arteries which may cause a stroke.
Q: What can I expect during a Carotid Doppler?
A: The technologist will perform the procedure lying on your back on an examination table. A clear gel will be applied to the neck where the Carotid artery is located. When the transducer or Ultrasound probe is placed over the neck an image will appear on the monitor. When evaluating the blood flow you will hear a noise comparable to your heartbeat. The Doppler operates similar to a microphone which is why you can not talk during the examination. The examination will take approximately 30-45 minutes.
Q: What are the risks involved in a Carotid Doppler
A: Since the examination is non-invasive, there are no dyes or x-rays used, there is no pain or risk involved.
Q: Is there preparation involved?
A: You may eat, drink and take daily medications as usual. Clothing should be without a constrictive neckline or collar. Please restrain from wearing necklaces and large earrings. Gum chewing is not allowed.
Symptoms you might experience if there were a blockage in the carotid arteries. There are several signs and symptoms that you may experience such as:
