Renal Artery Doppler

A Renal Artery Doppler exam uses Ultrasound and Doppler to evaluate the arterial blood flow in the renal arteries which supply blood to your kidneys.

Q: What can I expect during a Renal Artery Doppler?

A: You will be asked to remove clothing from the waist up. You will be given a gown and sheet to wear during the examination. The technologist will perform the procedure with you lying on your back and on your side .A clear gel will be applied on the abdomen. When the transducer or Ultrasound probe is placed over the abdomen an image will appear on the monitor. The technologist may ask you to hold your breath for a few seconds while measurements are taken. When evaluating the blood flow you will hear a noise comparable to your heartbeat. The examination will take approximately 1 1/2 hours.

Q: What are the risks involved in a Renal Artery Doppler?

A:  Since the examination is non-invasive, there are no dyes or x-rays used, there is no pain or risk involved.

Q: Is there preparation involved?

A: You will be asked to not eat or drink after midnight on the night prior to your examination. We ask that you avoid smoking or chewing gum the day of the exam.  Medications may be taken with a sip of water.
